Description
This database contains concentrations of pharmaceuticals, diuron, isoproturon and endocrine disruptors measured in water, sediment < 63 µm and biota. more

Concentrations of pharmaceuticals, diruon, isoproturon and endocrine disruptors were determined for:
  • water, biota and sediment < 63 µm sampled in the Scheldt estuary, Belgian coastal harbours and Belgian coastal waters. Sediment samples were taken with a Van Veen grab, while water was sampled with a Niskin or Go Flo bottle.
  • the pollutant mix absorbed from the water by passive samplers which were deployed at &&&, for at least six weeks. Passive samplers are a powerful tool in measuring the concentrations of hydrophobic organic compounds, due to their high affinity for these substances. Hydrophobic contaminants are often difficult to detect using conventional sampling techniques because of their low water solubility. The uptake of organic compounds by the passive samplers is driven by a diffusive process. Back calculation to the water phase is possible using uptake kinetics and equilibrium constants.
  • biota subjected to bioassays conducted in the field or in the laboratory.
  • mussels and oysters encaged at the Sluice dock in Ostend and in the harbour of Zeebrugge.
