Description
It is widely recognized that wide areas of the Arctic are changing from arctic to subarctic conditions. Rapid warming is causing higher water temperatures and reduced ice cover, two factors that will certainly provoke severe ecosystem changes propagating through all trophic levels. At this stage, it is essential to establish benchmarks in biodiversity at key locations in the Canadian Arctic prior to (a) the expected changes in ice cover, ocean chemistry and climate and (b) the future human activities (transport, trawling or dredging, fossil fuel, etc.) that are likely to happen in response to the predicted environmental changes. Unlike Canada’s two other oceans, we have the opportunity to document pristine conditions before ocean changes and exploitation occurs. This could help sound management actions in the Arctic. more

The main objective is to describe and compare the biodiversity, using a variety of different diversity indices, in different locations of the Canadian Arctic in relation to environmental variables (e.g. substrate type, temperature, salinity, oxygen concentration, primary productivity, current speed, bottom topography). The surveys were done during the ArcticNet cruises since 2007 and were conducted each year onboard the CCGS Amundsen. A box core and an Agassiz trawl were deployed to collect macrobenthic fauna (endo and epifauna). Catches are completely sorted, weighted and identified to the lowest taxonomic level possible. The OBIS collection makes accessible a subset of the survey results. The current OBIS version includes presence information only. Abundance and biomass information may be released in a future version.
