Description
The cockle Cerastoderma edule (Linnaeus,1758) is usually found in the tidal and subtidal areas along the coast of most European countries. To report its current distribution in the German Wadden Sea, we systematically collected individuals from intertidal flats, measured shell length and weigth of each individual. The study area ranged from the outer Ems Estuary to the outer Elbe estuary. Sampling was conducted from February to May 2022. moreCerastoderma edule (Linnaeus, 1758) is one of the most common and widely distributed bivalve species along european coasts (Dabouineau & Ponsero, 2009). Its distribution area extends from Norway to Senegal. To report its current distribution status in the central Wadden Sea, individuals were collected systematically from intertidal flats along 10 transects ranging from the outer Ems estuary to the outer Elbe estuary (German North Sea coast) between February and May 2022. In total, 4717 specimens of C. edule were sampled from 392 stations (highest abundance 355 ind/m2). The shell length ranged between 5.42 mm to 37.31 mm.
