Alliance Against Cancer (Alleanza Contro il Cancro) is the Italian Association created in 2002 by the Ministry of Health in order to coordinate the national activities related to information to patients, cancer networks creation, development of research activities, on the one hand, and to contribute to a better participation to the development of the European Research Area in the field of cancer, on the other. ACC acts to promote an active collaboration among Italian Research Institutes and Patients’ Association through the exchange of information, knowledge, data, scientific results and human resources. A Focal Point for International Affairs has been established with the task of interacting with similar bodies at national and international level to promote the Italian participation in European or other International Programmes. ACC plays a key role in the strengthening qualified national cancer research; implementing a real sharing of knowledge, and an adequate flow of young and skilled scientists; integrating research infrastructures into a network; coordinating research programmes in line with the European strategy set out in the Green Paper of the European Commission "The ERA: New Perspectives", 4 April 2007. ACC has no direct involvement in research projects and does not develop intramural research, being a Research Manager with management and coordination tasks. The Italian Ministry of Health declares that ACC acts as “Programme Manager” as defined in the ERA-NET guidelines and Prof. Claudio Lombardo will be responsible for the management of the Association’s participation in the ERA-NET project.
