The Rederscentrale was founded in 1950, originally as a producerorganisation to support market forces. However she soon became a professional organisation that acted as a communication channel between the fishery sector and the gouvernment. At present, the Rederscentrale is the officially recognized professional fishery organisation in Belgium and she plays an active role in regional (e.g. Quatacommission), national (e.g. bedrijfsraad), and European (e.g. NWWRAC an NSRAC) fishery related organisations. The Rederscentrale represent about 90 shipping companies of which the major part owns flatfisg directed beam trawlers. Furthermore the Rederscentrale is closely involved in projects dealing with safety on board, quality evaluation and assurance of fish products, development of alternative fishing techniques for beam trawl fisheries, etc.
