The scientific activities of our group are related to the study of physiological mechanisms, at molecular level, that are induced by pollutants.in tissues of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. Specifically it is investigated:
• The signal transduction pathway that is activated after pollutants exposure in tissues of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. In that area it is measured enzyme activities, protein kinaase C, ionic antiporters, oxygen radicals and pro-apoptotic events as the DNA fragmentation. The mechanism of uptake of pollutants by the cell is also investigated. Τhe function of pollutants as endocrine disruptors is also studied.
• The bio-monitoring of the pollution in Thermaikos gulf (Northern Greece), by examining the biomarkers metalothioneins and achetylcholinesterases in various tissues of the common mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis.. These studies are conducted both in field, as well as in the laboratory.
• Our research is also focused on the application of new biomarkers that could be very early indicators of stress in marine systems.. A signaling molecule, cAMP gives very encouraging results as a new biomarker.
