Italian title: Progetto pilota per il monitoraggio della corrente marina costiera dell'Alto Adriatico Funder identifier: 106 (Other contract id) Acronym: NASCUM Period: May 2007 till June 2008 Status: Completed
Università Ca’ Foscari di Venezia; Consortium for Coordination of Research Activities concerning the Venice Lagoon System (CORILA), more, co-ordinator
NASCUM aims to create within Axis 1, Measure 1. la, pilot project in the North Adriatic area in order to reveal surface marine currents, through the instillation of a coastal radar system that integrates the environmental measurements already in place. The information transmitted in real time will be of immediate use for navigation and rescue activities in the area, for action to be taken in case of oil spills or in relation to the presence of mucilage or similar that can have a distinct impact on the coastal tourist and fishing industries. The area under consideration is subject to intense naval traffic, including oil tankers, and is therefore at risk of environmental disasters for which the knowledge of surface circulation is of the utmost importante. Furthermore, the information gathered by the monitoring will permit the elaboration and validation of a model of coastal processes, such as the movement of sediments and coastal erosion. This represents an indispensable basis for cost management, mainly remitted to the regions. Through NASCUM, these regions will have at their disposal an innovative system that is already in use in United States and that has already been tried out in local research. The project permits an intensification of collaboration between local administrations and research bodies of the countries involved, developing combined action applied to the management of the common good that is the Adriatic Sea and promoting the transfer of specific expertise.
