Monitoring of the quality of the marine environment of the Belgian continental shelf and the Scheldt estuary within the framework of the Paris Convention. Monitoring of heavy metals (Hg, MeHg, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb) in the dissolved and the suspended particulate phase. Samples are immediately filtered aboard the vessel in the clean lab container. Dissolved metals are preconcentrated with a combined complexation-extraction method prior to analysis. Filters are destructed in concentrated acid, and diluted with water. Determination is performed with GF-AAS, ICP-MS or ICP-AES. Monitoring of radio-isotopes in the suspended particulate phase. Centrifuged samples are lyofilised, mixed with Avicel, pressed into a specific geometry and counted with High-Purity Ge- detectors
