De onderzoeksactiviteiten op het gebied van massaspectrometrie gingen in Bergen van start in het midden van de jaren 1960, toen het laboratorium voor Organische Chemie van de faculteit Wetenschappen de eerste massaspectrometer verwierf. Nu bestudeert het laboratoire de Synthèse et Spectrométrie de Masse Organiques (S2MOs) de volgende onderzoeksthema's:
  • chemie van natuurlijke moleculen zoals saponinen, flavonoïden, lipiden en polysacchariden om (i) de moleculaire diversiteit in levende organismen zoals planten, microalgen of zeedieren vast te stellen en zo hun biologische rol te bepalen; (ii) de structuur van natuurlijke moleculen te wijzigen om hun biologische eigenschappen te versterken; (iii) complexe biologische moleculen te gebruiken om massaspectrometrische technieken te ontwikkelen, met name ionenmobiliteitsspectrometrie;
  • chemie van synthetische macromoleculen zoals biologisch afbreekbare of geconjugeerde polymeren om hoofdzakelijk MS-methoden voor hun structurele karakterisering te optimaliseren of onze partners te helpen hun synthetische ontwikkelingen te valideren;
  • chemie van peptoïden, dat zijn synthetische biomimetische moleculen van peptiden om (i) de relatie primaire structuur/secundaire structuur vast te stellen en (ii) de structurele diversiteit van deze moleculen te gebruiken om chirale selectoren te creëren of systemen die zonne-energie kunnen opslaan (Molecular Solar thermal Energy Storage - MOST);
  • ontwikkeling van massaspectrometriemethoden voor de analyse van oorspronkelijke organische moleculen, met bijzondere aandacht voor ionisatie/desorptie, diverse ionactiveringstechnieken en ionmobiliteitsscheiding.
