Op 1 januari 2014 werd de Nationale Plantentuin van België de Plantentuin van Meise, die deel uitmaakt van de Vlaamse overheid.
Het onderzoek in de Plantentuin van Meise is georganiseerd in vijf thema's:
- biodiversiteit;
- evolutie;
- ecosystemen;
- planten voor de samenleving;
- behoud van de biodiversiteit.
Binnen deze teams vormen plantensystematiek en aanverwante gebieden, zoals floristiek, fytogeografie, fylogenie, vergelijkende morfologie, pollen en sporen en vegetatiestudies de belangrijkste onderzoeksgebieden van het instituut. De Plantentuin concentreert zich op gematigd Europa (vooral België), de paleotropen (vooral Centraal-Afrika) en de poolgebieden (vooral Antarctica). Alle plantengroepen in traditionele zin worden bestudeerd: vaatplanten, bryofyten, algen en schimmels (inclusief korstmossen).
Het mariene onderzoek van de groep richt zich op diatomeeën, macroalgen en schimmels. Hoewel vooral zoetwateralgen worden bestudeerd, behoren ook mariene, kust- en brakwater (Afrikaans binnenlands zout) soorten tot het onderzoeksgebied (de term 'kust' verwijst in dit verband naar de oevers van de (grote) meren). Een internationale reputatie werd opgebouwd met de studie van algen uit aride en semi-aride gebieden in Noord-Afrika en Sub-Sahara Afrika. Verder omvat het diatomeeënonderzoek diversiteit en biogeografische studies van poolgebieden (vooral Antarctica en sub-Antarctische eilanden), en diversiteit van epizoïsche diatomeeën op zeeschildpadden. Het mariene macroalgenonderzoek richt zich op taxonomie, evolutie en biogeografie van groene, rode en bruine zeewieren.
