De groep onderzoekt zoetwater ecosystemen van gematigde en tropische gebieden, met nadruk op taxonomie, fylogenie, biogeografie en ecologie van het zooplankton en zoobenthos van meren; lange-termijn dynamiek van aquatische gemeenschappen en ecosystemen onder de invloed van natuurlijke schommelingen in het klimaat en menselijke impact. Zowel fundamentele aspecten van biodiversiteit, gemeenschapsecologie en dynamiek van ecosystemen als meer toegepast onderzoek in het kader van globale klimaatswijzigingen, verlies van biodiversiteit en het behoud van ecosystemen. De groep organiseert korte en lange postgraduaat opleidingsprogramma's i.v.m. behoud van biodiversiteit en global change.
