De onderzoeksgroep Nematologie heeft reeds sinds de jaren ‘30 ervaring in het onderzoek van nematoden. Op dit moment richt het onderzoek zich op de taxonomie, fylogenie, morfologie en biologie van nematoden in natuurlijke en landbouwecosystemen. Dit onderzoek richt zich zowel op vrijlevende, plant-parasitisch, virus-vector families en entomopathogenische nematoden.
Er worden onder meer in beperkte mate mariene en brakwaternematoden bestudeerd met een focus op taxonomie, fylogenie en morfologie van Desmoscolecida, Epsilonematidae en Draconematidae. Desalniettemin overweegt de afdeling de organisatie van een jaarlijkse workshop over het identificeren van mariene nematoden. Verder draagt de groep, als editor, bij aan de World Database of Free-Living Marine Nematodes (NeMys).
