De Koninklijke Sterrenwacht van België (KSB) is een federale wetenschappelijke onderzoeksinstelling die ook dienstverlenende activiteiten verricht. De onderzoekers bestuderen zowel de planeet Aarde alsook andere ruimteobjecten. In de Sterrenwacht komen de volgende wetenschappelijke vakgebieden aan bod: astronomie, astrofysica, geofysica, seismologie, ruimtegeodesie, ruimteweer en zonnefysica. De KSB werkt ook samen met talrijke internationale centra.
Het mariene aspect van het gevoerde onderzoek focust zich op de volgende thema's:
- seismologisch onderzoek naar breuksystemen in de Noordzee (Straat van Dover);
- toepassing van oceanografisch onderzoek op planeten en hun satellieten;
- getijden van de aarde en de oceaan;
- bepaling van langetermijnbewegingen en vervormingen van de aardkorst op lokale, regionale en globale schaal met een invloed op het mariene milieu.
