De vakgroep Hydrologie en Waterbouwkunde heeft van meet af aan een sterke belangstelling gehad voor numerieke simulatietechnieken en computertoepassingen. Dit resulteerde in expertise in de ontwikkeling en het gebruik van hydrologische modelleringstechnieken. Bij de ontwikkeling, toepassing en visualisatie van deze modellen en hun resultaten wordt gebruik gemaakt van GIS en remote sensing. Onderzoeksprojecten op Vlaams, Belgisch en Europees niveau werden uitgevoerd met financiering van Vlaamse, Belgische en EU wetenschappelijke programma's, alsook rechtstreeks van overheden en industrie. De onderzoeksactiviteiten zijn gericht op de ontwikkeling, kalibratie en validatie van modelleringstechnieken voor:
- simulatie en voorspelling van de hydrologische processen op stroomgebiedschaal;
- simulatie en analyse van processen die de afvloeiing en de kwaliteit van het oppervlaktewater regelen;
- hydrodynamica en sedimenttransport alsmede lithologische en geomorfologische evolutie in het aquatisch milieu;
- beoordeling van kwantiteit en kwaliteit van grondwaterstromen en regionale grondwaterreservoirs;
- technieken voor het voorspellen en verbeteren van geïntegreerde waterbeheerpraktijken op regionale schaal;
- onderzoek naar ecohydrologie om de interactieve processen tussen water en milieu te kwantificeren, sterk gekoppeld aan GIS- en teledetectietechnieken.
Op marien en estuarien gebied is het onderzoek gericht op:
- waterbouwkundige werken, zoals rivierranden en -oevers, verdieping van vaargeulen en baggeren;
- verzanding, sedimentatie en erosie in gebieden van havens, dijken, dammen, zeeweringen en kustbeschermingsstructuren;
- effecten van grijze, blauw-groene infrastructuren op de structuur-procesinteractie en de daaruit voortvloeiende gevolgen voor de functionaliteit, natuurlijkheid en veiligheid van ecosystemen.
