SABBIA is a project carried out by University of Genoa and FEEM, in collaboration with local authorities, aimed at developing beach management tools in the Riviera del Beigua (Liguria Region, Italy). The first phase of the project aims to assess the environmental state of recreational beaches. This is done through an interdisciplinary data analysis, based on a sound understanding of the components of the physical and the human system. The subsequent phase of the project envisages the treatment of the data by means of various instruments such as the traditional SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) and a set of environmental and socio-economic indicators. The ultimate objective is to propose guidelines to support coastal zone planning and management policies on beaches.
