The distribution of iron in the 250-315 u fraction of bottom sands off Lowestoft-Thames shows three areas with apparently high iron contents. The high iron contents in the Thames estuary are probably explained by release of Fe2+ in the estuary, subsequent oxydation to Fe³+ and the formation of iron coatings on the sand grains. The central area of high iron content, off Harwich, is probably caused by the admixture of reworked Pliocene deposits. In the northern area the number of samples is too low to reach any conclusions about the origin of the high iron contents.
