The protozoan Bonamia ostreae is described as a hemocytic parasite of the oyster Ostrea edulis, and most studies have concentrated on this hemocytic phase of the oyster pathogen. However, despite long-term research, the complete life cycle of B. ostreae remained unsolved and several characteristics of the disease are not understood. Experiments in the Dutch oyster culture have led to a view of the presumptive life cycle, m which an infectious phase might be involved in the ovarian tissue of O. edulis.
