The interest of the chemical composition of molluscan shells in phylogenetical considerations is illustrated by the case of Neopilina.Chemical analyses of organic matrix of the different shell layers of Neopilina galatheae revealed the presence of chitin in nacrous and prism layers. Chitin is lacking in periostracum. The proportion of chitin is low (about 0.3 % of shell decalcified weight). Both microstructural and chemical caracteristics are in favor of a closest relationship of Monoplacophora with primitive Conchifera rather than with Amphineura.
