A semipurified diet was developed to study lipid nutrition in marine fish larvae from weaning onwards. An extruded basal diet was formulated from semipurified ingredients, ground and sieved to obtain particles in the ranges 150-300 µm and of 300-500 µm. A variable lipid fraction was added to the extruded nucleus by coating the particles with an emulsion in a fluidized bed dryer. Experiments were carried out with European seabass Dicentrarchus labrax which were weaned and consequently reared for three weeks on the experimental diets in a recirculation system. In each experiment a control treatment was fed a commercial diet. The suitability of the diets was assessed on the basis of survival, growth rate, and resistance to higher salinity stress. Furthermore, fatty acid composition of' diets and the fish were analyzed. Experiments were run to evaluate various protein sources in the extruded nucleus (a mixture of casein. gelatin and albumin: versus a mixture of hemoglobin meal, whey protein, soya protein concentrate, albumin, cod fish meal and wheat gluten; versus defatted cod fish meal), different oil emulsions used for the coating (coconut versus fish oil emulsion versus none) and the efficiency of the coating in quantitative studies of HUFA requirements (coated versus completely extruded diets with different HUFA content and composition) . A standard diet is proposed which is a suitable test diet for lipid nutrition research with the European seabass and other marine fish species from weaning onwards.
