Hydrodynamics and sediment transport. Fundamental aspects related to sustainable management of sandy coasts: literature survey and tentative research program. Draft
De Mulder, T.; Monbaliu, J. (2001). Hydrodynamics and sediment transport. Fundamental aspects related to sustainable management of sandy coasts: literature survey and tentative research program. Draft. Versie 1.01. K.U. Leuven/Universiteit Gent/Waterbouwkundig Laboratorium: [s.l.]. IV, 46 pp.
This report first presents a brief literature survey of hydrodynamics and non-cohesive sediment transport in coastal areas, i.e. sand transport processes under waves-only and waves-plus-current conditions. Only aspects of relevance to the present FWO research project are presented : some theory and modelling issues, related international/national research project, available software and experimental facilities. This part of the report is basically intended to be a source of information (and references) to interested people having a good basic knowledge of sediment mechanics. In a second part, this report introduces a major objective of the FWO research project, namely gaining insight into effects of complex wave spectra upon sand transport in coastal areas. Finally, a tentative research program is proposed in order to achieve this goal.
