Proximate and ultimate factors influencing clustering behaviour in the mangal-dwelling hermit crab Clibanarius laevimanus Buitendijk 1937 were studied in Kenya. Second, clustering may serve as a ''shell exchange market'' for those specimens who were wearing inappropriate shells.
