Abstract
    We present measurements of the consolidation characteristics of cohesive sediment from 5 different harbors, namely the harbor of Zeebrugge (ZB) and Deurganckdok (DG) in Belgium; the harbors of Ijmuiden (IJ) and Rotterdam (RO) in The Netherlands; and the harbor of Emden (EM) in Germany. Results of the consolidation rate are presented together with the temporal evolution of the vertical distribution of (i) the rheological characteristics of the cohesive sediment, (ii) pore water pressure and (iii) sediment characteristics. The latter comprises the grain size distribution and biological characteristics of the sediment. A significant difference is observed in the consolidation rate of the cohesive sediment from Ijmuiden and especially from Emden with respect to the consolidation rate of Rotterdam, Deurganckdok and Zeebrugge. The analysis of the grain size distribution shows that mud from different origins consists of different fractions of clay and silt and especially that mud from EM contains a higher silt fraction compared to the other mud types.
