The use of eye fluid instead of fish muscle for the determination of total volatile bases (TVB) appeared to be feasible with cod (Gadus morhua). A provisional spoilage limit of 30 mg N/100 ml could be proposed. Up to values of 40-45 mg there was a good correlation between TVB in muscle and in eye fluid. This was also the case between TVB and refractive index of the eye fluid. Determination of hypoxanthine and pH in eye fluid did not appear to be reliable quality assessment methods.
