Abstract
The capacity of container ships has been increasing rapidly the last few decades. Therefore, the size of the ships has grown but more importantly, containers are stacked higher. Thus, the wind-exposed surfaces have become bigger and due to the atmospheric boundary layer, the higher stacked containers are subject to larger wind velocities. Consequently the significance of wind forces acting on ships has increased. However, the current approach to model wind forces is based on a single reference velocity and hence does not take into account the higher wind velocities at higher altitude. The aim of this work is to find a new method to incorporate the non-uniformity of the wind velocity. Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, wind forces on the Kriso Container Ship are calculated. Three different velocity profiles are considered to study the effect of the non-uniformity of the velocity profile. Next, the results are compared with a modelling technique proposed by Blendermann. Overall, this method does not provide good results. Therefore, a new pressure coefficient-based panel method is introduced, which, based on preliminary results, performs better than Blendermann’s method. Finally, suggestions to continue the development of this method are given.
