The UN has declared the period from 2021 to 2030 as the “Decade of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development”. By doing so, they intend to mobilize more people and resources to streamline and stimulate ocean research. The underlying aim is to support countries in achieving the 14th sustainable development objective: SDG 14 - Preserve and make sustainable use of oceans, seas and maritime resources.
Commissioned by the United Nations General Assembly, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC) will coordinate the preparations for the Decade and invite the global ocean community to prepare a plan for the next 10 years of ocean science and technology under the motto: the ocean we need for the future we want! To date, six preliminary objectives have already been proposed that prioritize the sustainable use of resources and the acquisition of new knowledge.
