Effects of feeding Artemia nauplii enriched with w3-HUFAs, soya bean lecithin, vitamins E and C on the growth, survival, development rate and stress resistance of Macrobrachium rosenberghii (De Man, 1879) larvae

The larvae of the freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii), were fed Artemia nauplii (Great Salt Lake strain) diet enriched with w3-HUFAs, soya lecithin, and vitamins E and C. A significant increase in growth (dry weight), survival, and rate of development of the larvae was observed when the levels of w3-HUFAs were increased. The stress resistance of the prawns was greatly enhanced by w3-HUFA enrichment of the Artemia diet. Enrichment with soya lecithine, vitamins E and C had no effect on the growth or survival of the larvae. The results suggest that whereas the enrichment of Artemia nauplii with w3-HUFAs has a major effect on the Macrobrachium larvae, no advantage is conferred by enrichment with either soya lecithin or vitamins E and C.
