Abstract
The relationship between benthic species diversity and environmental predictability results from patterns of distribution and abundance required for maintenance of genetic variability. Genetic variability adapts whole populations to unpredictable events not included in the physiological tolerance of all individuals of a species. Abundance, patchiness and dispersal of benthic organisms reflect the amount of genetic variability required for survival in the particular pattern of environmental change encountered by each species. Both terrestrial and marine examples are given of modes of adaptation in predictable and unpredictable environments.
