The mineral and organic features of the sediment in sea pens where Holothuria scabra is farmed in Madagascar are characterised here for the first time. The study was undertaken in four villages in southwest Madagascar where the growth rate of sea cucumbers was 0.5–2.1 g day-1. The results show that the sediment from Tampolove, where the growth rate of H. scabra was the fastest among the four villages surveyed, had the highest proportion of fine sand, protein concentration, and bacterial count of the four villages. In contrast, the total organic carbon proportion and the value of δ15N in the sediment from Tampolove were the lowest among the four villages.
