Abstract
The first records of attached occurrence of the brown alga S. muticum (Yendo) Fensholt in the south west Netherlands are reported, together with details on the ecology and distribution of the species. The alga was discovered in June 1980 in the western part of non-tidal saline Lake Grevelingen over a stretch of 6 km of stone sea-walls and rip-rap dams. Total biomass was negligible. The potential danger of the highly competitive S. muticum for the existing population of Zostera marina L. in Lake Grevelingen is discussed. A small attached population in the saline harbour-canal of Goes is also described.
