Abstract
Vertical profiles and horizontal sections of the reactive phosphate concentration in deep-sea basins in eastern Indonesia, based on data obtained during the Snellius-II and Indopac Expeditions, are given. Below 1000 m depth the concentration ranged from 2.7 to 2.9 mmol·m-3, slightly larger than in the waters flowing in from the Pacific Ocean. Below sill depth of isolated basins a small increase of phosphate is always found. This increase is related to decomposition of organic material, which shows that about 2% of the surface production of organic material is recycled in the lowermost 500 m, probably for a substantial part in the surface sediments.
