Abstract
    This systematic and integrated approach to the morphological and engineering problems of the alluvial river, initially presents hydrodynamic theories, measurements and model techniques; further it gives a comprehensive and systematic discussion of the possibilities of tackling river deficiences. Whilst the majority of the examples and cases cited by the authors are drawn from their experience with the Rivers Niger, Magdalena and Rhine, their aim is to give a comprehensive treatment of river engineering in general, rather than detailed information on any particular river system. The work derives from the experience of the authors at the Rijkswaterstaat (Public Works Department), Delft Hydraulics Laboratory, Delft University of Technology and Netherlands Engineering Consultants NEDECO. The ? rst four parts of the book cover the theoretical bases of river hydraulics, river surveys and river models, whilst the last part applies this theory and deals with the practical problems encountered by the engineer in designing and executing river works.
