De oorsprong van het Koninklijk Museum voor Midden-Afrika gaat terug tot de Internationale Tentoonstelling van Brussel in 1897. Op vraag van Koning Leopold II werd de Koloniale Afdeling van de tentoonstelling overgebracht naar het Afrikapaleis (vroeger 'Koloniënpaleis' genoemd) in Tervuren. In de tentoonstellingszalen werden wilde dieren, geologische stalen, handelswaar, Congolese etnografische en artistieke voorwerpen en in België gemaakte kunstvoorwerpen tentoongesteld. De naam van het museum is in de loop van zijn geschiedenis meermaals veranderd: van 'Museum van de Congo' over het 'Museum van Belgisch Congo' (toen de onafhankelijke Congostaat Belgisch Congo werd) en het in 1952 bij KB vastgelegde 'Koninklijk Museum van Belgisch Congo' tot het na de onafhankelijkheid van Congo uiteindelijk het 'Koninklijk Museum voor Midden-Afrika' werd. Sinds de renovatie is het museum beter bekend als het 'Afrika Museum'.
Afrika herbergt een enorme verscheidenheid aan soorten en ecosystemen die van mondiaal belang zijn. Om de kennis van de Afrikaanse biodiversiteit te bevorderen, betreft het onderzoek in dit museum de studie van de taxonomie en fylogenie van verschillende groepen gewervelde en ongewervelde dieren met behulp van morfologische en genetische benaderingen. Vervolgens wordt de structuur en functie van hout bestudeerd, evenals de rol van bomen en fauna in verschillende Afrikaanse ecosystemen. De onderzoekers evalueren het effect van menselijke activiteiten op deze ecosystemen en hun onderzoek combineert veldwerk met de studie van collecties, die 10 miljoen specimens bevatten. Er zijn twee diensten, JEMU (Joint Experimental Molecular Unit) en BopCo (barcoding facility for organisms and tissues of policy concern), die zich richten op bepaalde moleculair biologische technieken. Het doel is de kennis van de Afrikaanse biodiversiteit te verbeteren en te verspreiden via publicaties, online databanken en opleidingen.
Het mariene onderzoek betreft de biodiversiteit van gewervelde tropische Afrikaanse dieren, met de nadruk op zoet- en brakwatervissen: systematiek (taxonomie, fylogenie, biogeografie), ecologie, evolutiegeschiedenis. Morfometrie, en osteologische en moleculaire technieken worden het meest gebruikt. Op deze manier probeert het Koninklijk Museum voor Midden-Afrika een beter inzicht te krijgen in de diversiteit van de vissen in Afrika en zo ook bij te dragen tot het behoud ervan en tot duurzame visserij en aquacultuur.
