Sea Station Helgoland (AWI)
The Biological Station Helgoland was founded in 1892 and is the oldest German Marine Research Institute. The term ‘plankton’ originated here and many species were first discovered and described here. The rocky shores around Helgoland are a biodiversity hot spot for the southern North Sea and have always attracted numerous marine scientists. From its beginnings the Biological Station was closely connected to other European Marine Stations and was part of co-operations that are still important and are being intensified.
