Research objectives and content The Gulf of Corinth shelf and slope zone have been affected by submarine mass movements which have a significant impact on the continental borderland. This project aims to identify potentially hazardous coastal and offshore zones, to determine the characteristics of sediments, to assess the movement of sediment and to establish a numerical model for sediment transport processes. Offshore areas affected by recent earthquakes will be surveyed in order to identify the location and the origin of the mass movement events, and to explain the mecanism for slope failure. Field missions will be carried out in order to determine the submarine topography and morphology, the geometry of the sedimentary cover and the physical and mechanical properties of the sediments. The interpretation of the collected data will provide valuable information about slope stability processes and will be useful in order to diminish future risk to coastal infastructure.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The Laboratory of Marine Geology and Physical Oceanography at Patras has carried out a significant amount of researcher on fundamental and applied coastal geology. It will provide an interesting exchange of points of view between researchers working on the same field"
