Serge has a lifetime interest in the systematics and biogeography of molluscs, and was a curator at Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris until 1998 when he joined University of Málaga, Spain as a lecturer in Zoology. His research is focused on European and West African marine molluscs, with a particular attention to the Ibero-Moroccan area. His efforts of recent years have culminated in the collaborative publication of a large identification handbook for the marine molluscs of southern Spain. His involvement in databases had started with the creation of the Check List of European Marine Mollusca in 1995, also a collaborative effort which was later incorporated as the mollusc component of the European Register of Marine Species and later of WoRMS.
