How can we give our coast the resilience it needs to withstand a changing climate? This research question was central to the project CREST - what stands for Climate Resilient Coast - which for four years tried to deepen the Flemish expertise with regard to coastal processes by means of field measurements, laboratory tests and numerical modelling. The consortium consisting of ten partners from academia, the Government of Flanders and the private sector studied five scientific objectives:
- gain a better understanding of nearshore and onshore physical processes including improved models and the validation of ‘grey’ data about coastal dynamics;
- gain a better understanding of the flood risks along the coast and the impact of wave overtopping on structures, buildings and behavior of people inside;
- determine the resilience of the natural coastal system (dunes and beaches) in relation to storms and wind;
- validate calculations with today’s state of the art models on the basis of laboratory tests and field measurements in selected pilot areas;
- define improved climate change scenarios for the Belgian coast.
The findings of this research will be presented at the CREST final conference on Thursday 26 September 2019 in Greenbridge Ostend.
