Abstract
POG, DOG and sedimentation were studied during the spring phytoplankton bloom from April 27 to May 25. POG in the euphotic layer consisted largely of phytoplankton, maximum values of 0.5 mg·dm-3 were found at the height of a bloom of the colonial microflagellate Corymbellus aureus. DOG increased during the waxing of this C. aureus bloom to a maximum of 2.4 mg·dm-3 after the bloom. Data indicate that most of the primary produced material ended up in the DOG pool. Sedimentation accounted only for small losses from the euphotic zone: ca 1% of the daily primary produced material sank out, except at the end of the C. aureus bloom when values increased to almost 10%. Daily sedimentation amounted to no more than 0.1 to 1% of the amounts present in the euphotic layer of POG, chlorophyll and phytoplankton cells.
