The effect was studied of adding selected bacteria to the water and in some cases to the food, on the survival and growth of fish larvae. Five bacteria were used: Vibrio proteolyticus, V. mediterranei, Aeromonas hydrophila, Glucanobacter sp. and an unidentified Cluster A. From day 5 there was a significant difference in uptake of rotifers between the control group and the probiont group. The bacterial inoculation of the culture water has a positive influence on the first colonization of the larval intestine, but this showed only after three days. The bacteria added to the rotifer culture were not found back in the rotifers themselves. This shows that the adding of bacteria before the start of feeding has the biggest impact. Cluster A, Vibrio proteolyticus and Glucanobacter sp. had a positive influence on survival on the fifth day compared to the control group: 95%, 93%, 93% and 74% respectively. Aeromonas hydrophila and Vibrio mediterranei both showed no significant effect on larval survival. The study results show that the selected bacterial strains have to be administered as soon as possible. Cluster A, Vibrio proteolyticus and Glucanobacter sp. are potential probionts that need further testing at large scale.
