Abstract
Evolution has shaped all of Earth’s ecosystems. But now, as anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions rapidly warm our planet, scientists are questioning whether thermal adaptation can keep pace with warming (1), especially in key habitatforming species. Coral reefs are suffering from unprecedented declines because of climate change, with marine heat waves triggering mass coral mortality, threatening ecological collapse (2).
