A new replacement name, Acanthocythereis huyangorum nom. nov., is proposed for the nominal species Acanthocythereis spinosa (Hu & Yang, 1975) (Crustacea, Oligostraca, Ostracoda), a junior secondary homonym of Acanthocythereis? spinosa (Lienenklaus, 1900). The two nominal species also have an earlier history of secondary homonymy within the genus Trachyleberis Brady, 1898. The type series of Acanthocythereis huyangorum nom. nov. is affirmed to consist of all the specimens designated as either the holotype or paratypes of Trachyleberis spinosa by Hu & Yang; an attempt by later authors to restrict the application of the specific name to one of the paratypes is invalid.
